Car Brakes - Milton Keynes

At Bridge Autocare, we inspect, repair, and replace brakes on cars and vans of most makes, from pads and discs through to calipers, brake fluid, and electronic parking brakes.

Signs your brakes need checking

The way your brakes sound and feel can tell you a lot about their condition. Book a check if you notice any of the following:

  • Squealing or squeaking when you brake, which is often the wear indicator telling you the pads are getting low
  • Grinding, which usually means the pads have worn down to the metal and are damaging the discs
  • Vibration or judder through the brake pedal or steering wheel, often caused by uneven or worn discs
  • The car pulling to one side under braking, which can point to a sticking caliper
  • A soft or spongy pedal, or one that travels further than usual before the brakes bite
  • A brake warning light on the dashboard
  • A burning smell after driving, which can mean a brake is dragging
  • A soft pedal or grinding noise should be looked at straight away, so avoid driving more than necessary until it’s been checked.

Brake pads and discs

Pads press against the discs to slow the vehicle, and both wear with use, but how long they last depends on your driving, the vehicle’s weight, and where you drive. Stop-start town traffic and carrying heavy loads wear them faster, which is why vans often need brakes more frequently than cars.

Pads can last anywhere from around 20,000 to 60,000 miles, and discs usually need replacing every second set of pads, although this varies. We measure both against the manufacturer’s minimum specifications and only recommend replacing them when they need it.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and can make the brakes feel less effective under heavy use, and many manufacturers recommend changing it every two years. We can test the moisture content of your brake fluid and replace it if it’s due.

Brakes on hybrid and electric vehicles

Hybrids and electric cars use regenerative braking to slow down, which means the pads often wear more slowly. The downside is that the discs aren’t used as much, so they can corrode and lose efficiency, but don’t worry, as we will check for this during inspections and advise on whether any work is needed.

How our brake service works

  • We inspect the pads, discs, calipers, hoses, and brake fluid.
  • Pad and disc thickness are measured and compared with the manufacturer’s limits.
  • You’ll receive a clear quote and an explanation of what needs doing and why.
  • Worn parts are replaced using OEM parts.
  • The system is checked and bled if needed, then road-tested before you collect.
