Clutch Replacement – Milton Keynes

Clutch replacement involves removing the gearbox to fit a new clutch kit, which usually includes the friction plate, pressure plate, and release bearing. At Bridge Autocare, we replace clutches on cars and vans of most makes, and the majority of jobs are completed within a day.

Signs your clutch needs replacing

Clutches wear gradually, so the warning signs can creep up on you. The most common ones are:

  • Slipping, where the engine revs rise but the car doesn’t speed up to match, especially in higher gears, uphill, or when overtaking
  • A biting point that’s much higher in the pedal travel than it used to be
  • Difficulty getting into gear, or grinding when you change
  • Juddering as you pull away
  • A burning smell, particularly after hill starts or heavy traffic
  • A pedal that feels heavy, spongy, or sticks to the floor
  • A whirring or rumbling noise that changes when you press the pedal, often caused by a worn release bearing
  • A slipping clutch tends to get worse quickly, so it’s best to have it checked before it leaves you unable to drive.

What wears a clutch out

Every clutch wears with use, but how quickly depends on how and where the vehicle is driven; for example, lots of stop-start traffic, holding the car on the clutch at junctions, towing, and carrying heavy loads all add wear. That’s why vans often need clutches sooner than cars covering similar mileage. As a rough guide, many clutches last somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, although some need replacing earlier.

Dual-mass flywheels explained

Many diesel cars and vans, along with a growing number of petrol models, use a dual-mass flywheel. It has a built-in damper that smooths out engine vibrations, but it wears over time just like the clutch. Some signs of a worn dual-mass flywheel include rattling at idle, vibration through the pedal, and knocking when you switch the engine off.

Because the gearbox has to come out to reach it during a clutch replacement, it often makes sense to replace both at the same time. We’ll inspect the flywheel during the job and give you a clear recommendation and price before fitting anything extra.

How we replace your clutch

  • We road test the vehicle and inspect the clutch system to confirm the fault.
  • You’ll get a full quote, including whether the flywheel is likely to need replacing.
  • The gearbox is removed, and the old clutch and flywheel are inspected.
  • A new clutch kit is fitted using OEM parts.
  • We check the hydraulic system and bleed it where needed.
  • The gearbox is refitted, and the vehicle is road tested before you collect it.
