Car Diagnostics - Milton Keynes

Vehicle diagnostics means using specialist equipment to read the fault codes stored in your vehicle’s computer systems, then testing to find the actual cause of the problem. At Bridge Autocare, we use Snap-on diagnostic equipment on cars and vans of most makes, including hybrids and electric vehicles.

Warning lights that need checking

The warning lights on your dashboard are colour-coded for a reason. Amber lights mean something needs attention soon, while red lights usually mean you should stop as soon as it’s safe to do so. The ones we’re asked about most often are:

  • Engine management light. A steady light means a fault has been logged and should be checked. A flashing light often points to a misfire that could damage the catalytic converter, so ease off and get it looked at promptly.
  • Oil pressure or coolant temperature (red). Stop the engine as soon as it’s safe, because driving on can cause serious engine damage.
  • Battery or charging light. This usually signals a problem with the alternator or charging system rather than the battery itself.
  • ABS, airbag, and traction control lights. These safety systems may not work properly until the fault is fixed.
  • DPF and glow plug lights on diesels, which can lead to reduced power if ignored.

Signs to look out for

Not every fault triggers a light on the dash, so it’s worth also booking a diagnostic check if you notice:

  • Loss of power or the car going into limp mode
  • Rough idling, hesitation, or juddering when accelerating
  • A sudden drop in fuel economy
  • Difficulty starting, particularly from cold
  • Smoke from the exhaust or unusual smells
  • Electrical faults, such as windows, central locking, or sensors behaving oddly

A fault code tells you which system has reported a problem, but it rarely tells you exactly which part has failed. That’s why our technicians treat the code as a clue rather than an answer. They look at live data from the engine and other systems, check wiring and connections, and test individual components until the real cause is confirmed.

How our diagnostic process works

  • We start by asking about the symptoms, including when they happen, how often, and whether anything changed beforehand.
  • Every relevant system is scanned using our Snap-on equipment.
  • Live data and recorded fault information are reviewed to narrow down the cause.
  • Targeted tests are carried out, along with a road test if needed.
  • We explain what we’ve found in plain English and give you a price for the repair before anything goes ahead.
  • Once the repair is complete, we clear the codes and check the fault hasn’t returned.

Why choose us for diagnostics

Our background in engine rebuilds and head gasket repairs gives us a deeper understanding of what’s happening inside an engine than many workshops have. The size of our workshop means we usually have the capacity to book you in quickly, and if your vehicle is needed urgently, we’ll prioritise it wherever possible. We carry out repairs on site using OEM parts and are backed by our 12-month labour guarantee.
