MOT – Milton Keynes

At Bridge Autocare, we carry out Class 4 MOTs for cars and light vans, as well as Class 7 MOTs for larger vans up to 3,500kg. With two testing bays on site, we can usually book you in quickly.

If your vehicle passes, you’ll leave with your certificate the same day, but if it doesn’t, our technicians can carry out the repairs here at Bridge Autocare, often straight away, so you won’t need to arrange work at another garage.

Class 4 or Class 7?

  • Class 4 covers cars, taxis, motor caravans, passenger vehicles with up to eight passenger seats, and goods vehicles up to 3,000kg design gross weight.
  • Class 7 covers goods vehicles over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg, which includes many large panel vans and Luton vans.

If you don’t know which class your car or van is in, check your previous MOT certificate as it should say there; however, if you’re still unsure, give us a call with your registration, and we’ll check for you.

When your MOT is due

Cars and vans need their first MOT once they reach three years old, and every year after that. You can have the test up to a month (minus a day) before your current certificate runs out and still keep the same renewal date.

Driving without a valid MOT can lead to a fine of up to £1,000 and may affect your insurance, but the only exceptions are driving to a pre-booked MOT or to a garage for repairs needed to pass.

What the MOT checks

  • Brakes, including their performance and the condition of visible components
  • Lights, indicators, and dashboard warning lights
  • Tyres and wheels, with a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre
  • Steering and suspension
  • Seats and seatbelts
  • Exhaust, emissions, and the fuel system
  • Body and structure, checking for excessive corrosion and sharp edges
  • Windscreen, wipers, washers, and mirrors
  • Horn, registration plates, and the vehicle identification number

Understanding your result

Any faults found are sorted into categories:

  • Dangerous faults mean an immediate fail, and the vehicle shouldn’t be driven until they’re fixed.
  • Major faults also mean a fail and must be repaired.
  • Minor faults still allow a pass but are recorded on your certificate.
  • Advisories are items to keep an eye on.

We’ll explain each one and let you know whether it needs attention now or can safely wait.

If your vehicle fails, you’ll get a clear quote before any repairs go ahead. We fit OEM parts and guarantee our labour for 12 months, and if you leave your vehicle with us for repairs and it’s retested within 10 working days, the partial retest is free.
